A Complete Carbon Emission Reporting Solution

Whether a large coorperation, a small business or an individual we have developed ApeX to allow for accurate and complete carbon emission reporting to help users keep track of their carbon footprint, and take steps to offset this and work towards greener energy usage in the UK.

User Interface

  • Single point data entry for Carbon Emission and Energy Consumption (SECR) data.
  • Adaptive content display to simplify data entry.
  • Integrated Help functionality to guide you along.
  • Data validation to reduce input errors.
  • Graphical reports are very easy to create at the click of a button
  • An export chart capability will create Microsoft Excel format documents.
  • The print chart capability is at the click of a button.
  • Customisable user interface, including high contrast for users who need it.

Broad Range of Emission Categories

  • For home owners - the carbon footprint for the household emissions can be calculated.
  • For businesses - commercial emissions can be calculated if the emission factor is in the UK Governemnt list.
  • We use the BEIS Full list. That’s over 7,000 emission factors.

Complex Emission Calculations

  • Compare the emissions from flight, rail, ferry, passenger vehicle and other travel options.
  • Integrate security and other related emissions to enable smart, safe and green choices whenever possible.
Over 55,000 airports enables customised distance calculations Use fuel consumption to calculate emissions for private jets and helicopters

Integrated Help

  • Help supports new and non technical users.
  • For commercial users, ’learn as you earn’.
  • Further optimisation of the Help functionality is envisaged, following user feedback.

Report capability

  • Create a report for each emission that is entered into the software.
  • See how the total emission is calculated by displaying each of the contributory emissions.
  • Calculate carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, methane and their equivalent carbon dioxide emission.
  • Calculate the carbon offset price for the eCO2 emission.
  • Enter the latest carbon price and £/€ exchange rate in Settings.
  • Select monthly, quarterly, annual or custom duration reports to display emission data.
  • Create emission type reports for air travel, passenger vehicle, ferry travel etc...
  • Use the custom filter and date to/from options to create bespoke reports.

Asset emission tracking

  • Use the comments field to enter asset identification numbers for ongoing asset emission tracking.
  • Use custom search to find all emission records related to the asset and filter further using the date to/from fields.

Review & Storage of Records

  • All emission records are stored locally on the user’s PC.
  • Collate multiple user data to establish organisational emissions.
  • Do your own analysis with our source data.
Wildcard search capability. Find records using the emission type. Review historical flight emission records. File type is Microsoft Excel. Full data download capability to assist analysis Integrated Emission and Energy consumption (SECR) data.

Technical Capability

The calculator uses the full list of emissions factors that are provided by BEIS, UK governments department for Business, energy and industrial strategy (BEIS). For more information about the BEIS emission factor methodology and access to the full list of emission factors, use the ’About’ and ’BEIS’ buttons at the bottom RHS of the emission data entry form. Over 7,000 BEIS emission factors, the full list, is made available through a simple user interface that helps with the selection of the appropriate emission type. BEIS update this list on an annual basis so we will also update the calculator to include these changes on an annual basis. BEIS updates and ApeX software patches are delivered using the integrated update process.

The UK government introduced the Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR) requirement for businesses in scope to report their energy consumption data. The calculator determines the energy consumption for each emission record if a SECR factor was issued in the BEIS 2020 full list.

Given the direct use of the full list of BEIS emission factors, the transparency of the data calculation process, and our approach to data storage we believe that our calculator easily meets the expectations of the HMRC. As the number of calculator users increases we will also seek independent assurance of its capabilities and our software development processes.

Each emission record is calculated by first determining the various emission components. For each of these, the calculator then uses the BEIS emission factors for carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrous oxide (N2O), methane (CH4) and the equivalent carbon dioxide (eCO2) to determine the overall emission.

The Vincenty inverse formula for ellipsoids is used to calculate the distance between airports using its latitude, longitude and elevation. To correct for the oblique spheroidal shape of the earth it uses the World Geodetic System (WGS-84) correction factors. With over 55,000 global airports to choose from, this makes the flight distance calculator a very comprehensive and capable tool. To find an airport it is possible to use the airport name, GPS code, IATA or local code to pre-filter the dropdown list from which the required airport can be selected.

We recognise that making emission calculations can be complex, so we’ve made the user interface as simple as possible and integrated an extensive help facility to support users as they learn how to use the software. Start as a complete novice and then when you are an expert you can turn off the help, if necessary. Each help item is selected by clicking a ’?’ symbol and these are located next to the input features of the user interface. With this approach we hope to optimise your learning outcomes.

User feedback is encouraged to optimise the calculator software and especially the help facility. If you have any great suggestions, please let us know!
