Intellectual property and patent position

Protecting the core engineering concepts behind Pliosaur Energy's hydrokinetic system and maintaining patent rights in selected jurisdictions.

Patent foundation

Protecting the hydrokinetic system

Pliosaur Energy filed a United Kingdom patent application for its hydrokinetic system in January 2014.

The application was published as GB2521836A and subsequently granted as GB2521836B.

An international Patent Cooperation Treaty application was filed in December 2014 to support the pursuit of patent protection in selected jurisdictions outside the United Kingdom.

The resulting patent family forms part of the intellectual-property foundation supporting the continued development and potential commercialisation of the Pliosaur Energy platform.

Scope of protection

Rights defined by the granted claims

The patents concern the hydrokinetic system described in the relevant patent specifications and the legal rights defined by the claims granted in each jurisdiction.

Patent protection does not automatically extend to every component, drawing, operating principle or subsequent development associated with the wider Pliosaur Energy platform.

Additional technical developments may be protected through further patent applications, copyright, registered rights, confidential information, contractual controls and proprietary engineering know-how, where appropriate.

Ownership

Intellectual property held by Pliosaur Energy

The retained patent rights within this patent family are assigned to Pliosaur Energy Ltd.

Ownership of the relevant intellectual property enables the company to control its use in technology development, manufacturing, project partnerships and potential licensing arrangements.

The commercial value of the patent portfolio will depend on factors including the scope and validity of the granted claims, the territories in which protection is held and the relevance of those claims to the final commercial technology.

Patent portfolio

Granted patent rights

Company records identify granted patent rights relating to the Pliosaur Energy hydrokinetic system in the following jurisdictions:

  • United Kingdom: GB2521836B — Hydrokinetic System.
  • Canada: Canadian Patent No. 2,935,485 — Hydrokinetic System.

Patent rights are territorial. The scope of protection in each jurisdiction is determined by the claims granted by the relevant patent authority.

Commercial application

Supporting technology development and partnerships

Pliosaur Energy's intellectual-property strategy is intended to support the continued engineering development of the technology and protect commercially important innovations.

The patent portfolio may support future manufacturing, technology licensing, joint development and project partnership arrangements.

Patent protection is considered alongside confidential know-how, technical documentation, contractual rights, brand protection and the continuing development of new engineering solutions.

Continuing innovation

Protecting future developments

The Pliosaur Energy platform will continue to evolve as engineering analysis, testing and commercial-development work progresses.

New inventions and commercially important improvements will be assessed to determine whether patent protection, confidentiality or another form of intellectual-property control is appropriate.

This approach is intended to preserve commercially valuable knowledge while allowing the company to work effectively with research, engineering, manufacturing and project partners.

Important patent information

Patent rights are territorial and limited to the scope of the claims granted in each jurisdiction.

Their legal status can change through amendment, assignment, surrender, lapse, expiry, revocation or other legal events.

References to patent protection do not constitute a guarantee of technical performance, commercial success, enforceability or freedom to operate.

The company periodically reviews its intellectual-property records and relevant official-register information.
