Progressing from validation to deployment

Pliosaur Energy's ambition is to develop marine-energy arrays in partnership with the communities, ports, shipyards, manufacturers and supply-chain businesses that could help deliver them.

Any future programme will depend on technical validation, local engagement, environmental assessment, regulatory approval, grid availability, project finance, commercial viability and the support of host communities.

Our current aspiration is to progress through a phased development programme:

  • demonstrate the integrated technology at commercial scale;
  • develop and connect an initial small array;
  • expand deployment where environmental, technical, commercial and community conditions support it; and
  • develop a distributed UK manufacturing and operations network capable of supporting larger arrays and potential future exports.

The timing, location, capacity and configuration of each phase will evolve through engineering development, consultation and detailed project assessment.

Resource opportunity

UK wave and tidal resources

The United Kingdom has extensive wave, tidal-stream and tidal-range resources distributed around its coastline.

These resources create a potential long-term market for technologies capable of operating in suitable estuarine, coastal and offshore environments.

Resource availability alone does not establish that a location is suitable for development. Each potential site would require detailed assessment of hydrodynamics, bathymetry, environmental sensitivity, navigation, infrastructure, grid access and commercial viability.

Potential application

Development potential of the technology

Pliosaur Energy's floating and modular configuration is intended to support deployment at suitable sites with combined wave and tidal resources, or with one resource acting independently.

The concept could potentially be applied across several UK regions, although the practical opportunity at any location will depend on project-specific engineering, environmental and commercial evidence.

The accompanying illustration represents areas of potential interest. It is not a statement of secured seabed rights, approved development zones or committed projects.

Proposed programme

A distributed UK development model

Pliosaur's development strategy is based on the possible phased deployment of marine-energy arrays supported by a national network of ports, shipyards, manufacturers and offshore-engineering businesses.

Current planning work considers two possible development regions: the Bristol Channel and the west coast of Scotland.

Together, these regions could provide a basis for testing a distributed delivery model connecting industrial capability in Wales, southwest England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

These regions remain development aspirations. Final site selection would require resource assessment, seabed and property rights, environmental studies, consultation, consents, grid arrangements and finance.

Proposed first region

Bristol Channel development scenario

The Bristol Channel is being considered as a possible region for the first commercial-scale demonstration and subsequent array development.

The current illustrative pathway comprises:

  • Phase 1: construct, install and evaluate a 1 MW prototype turbine.
  • Phase 2: subject to satisfactory prototype results, develop and connect a small initial array potentially including three additional turbines.
  • Phase 3: consider progressive expansion, potentially up to approximately 1,500 turbines, only where environmental, technical, regulatory and commercial evidence supports that scale.

Manufacturing, assembly, deployment and maintenance could create opportunities for ports, shipyards and supply-chain businesses across Wales and southwest England.

Proposed second region

West coast of Scotland development scenario

Pliosaur Energy is also considering the west coast of Scotland as a possible region for a future marine-energy array.

The region combines substantial marine-energy potential with established experience in offshore engineering, marine operations and energy infrastructure.

A development programme could create opportunities for ports, shipyards and advanced-manufacturing businesses in Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Turbine manufacture and assembly could be distributed among suitable regional facilities, with local ports supporting deployment, operations and long-term maintenance.

Specific locations, capacities and commercial partners have not yet been selected.

Industrial opportunity

Supporting Britain's maritime capabilities

Commercial deployment of Pliosaur technology could support skilled employment and sustained industrial activity in ports, shipyards and coastal communities throughout the United Kingdom.

The modular floating turbines are intended to draw on existing British capabilities in shipbuilding, steel fabrication, marine engineering, electrical systems, offshore construction and vessel operations.

Rather than relying on a single manufacturing location, Pliosaur intends to explore a distributed delivery model connecting suitable facilities across the four nations of the United Kingdom.

This approach could strengthen domestic supply chains, support coastal industrial communities and develop additional UK capability in marine renewable energy.

Future supply-chain development

Scottish and Northern Irish maritime capability

Pliosaur intends to explore relationships with suitable ports, shipyards and manufacturing facilities in Scotland and Northern Ireland that could support a future west coast of Scotland programme.

Potential requirements include steel fabrication, component manufacture, turbine assembly, storage, load-out, deployment, vessel support and long-term maintenance.

Specific facilities will be identified only as the programme develops and appropriate technical and commercial relationships are established.

It does not indicate that project sites, seabed rights, planning permission, environmental consent, grid connections, funding or industrial partnerships have been secured.

Project locations, generating capacities, turbine numbers, development phases and supply-chain arrangements may change materially as engineering, consultation, environmental assessment and commercial development progress.
